2 Corinthians 10:5 Take Every Thought Captive
In our minds, wages a war of strength and vigor. It envelops our lives, this war. Day after day we must suit for it. Donning shield and sword, some days we find success in your efforts of mitigating these unrelenting thought; chasing down trouble phrases and queries.
They may be those of which neighbors are headed for divorce or our obsession over what your life would be if you’d made some other choice. Married a different spouse, chose a different career path. This my friends is called wrong thinking. It seeks to slip behind your well placed fortress of Bible quotes and verses, surprising you with its vulgarity and masquerading itself as truth.
We hear many a Sunday message on a kind word; on being your brother keepers, and not coveting what he has. But one of our headline Goliath’s are our very own thoughts. They pacify us at times, nullify our gratitude, and tame our joy. Seeking to choke us with their uncanny interpretations of reality.
What happens to the Christian left to rot in a dish of his own disdainful thoughts? How can he justify the garbage he allows to fester within him; he who is in agreement with these wrong thoughts. How is one to escape the cunning of a simple thought?
It is my case that the first step is to identify it as such. Before repentance, the eye must be opened, and subsequently plucked out. Be clear, in that, the thoughts are from the enemy, sent to make you destroy yourself due to lack of mercy. And so, we must tame our thoughts by first calling them out for what they are. Demonic, and not of God.
Once we do that, we can break ties with them; ridding them of power and shedding them as snake skin so that growth in Christ might manifest.
Summary
Wrong thoughtsalways precede wrong behavior.
We must first tame our thought before we can tame our behavior
The first step in this is calling the wrong thoughts out as wrong
In Practice
In your prayer time, write down all the wrong thoughts that pop up in your head.
Eaxmine the thought by asking yourself “Is this thought of God or the Devil”
The thoughts that don’t make the cut cast the out by saying “I rebuke that thought in the name of Jesus”.
The goal is to begin to do this with every thought that crosses our mind. We must test it to the fire of God’s standard.
